Podcasts Replacing Lectures?

Here is an interesting concept:

Dr Bill Ashraf, a professor of microbiology at Bradford University is getting rid of in-person lectures completely. Instead, he’s only recording the lessons for students to download as podcasts or video.

Students can then ask questions via email or text message, and the professor will respond on via his blog. Ashraf feels large lectures for the students are a waste… instead, using podcasted lectures and blogging, he frees himself up to offer additional office hours. Ashraf feels that his teaching style is far more effective because he can focus on spending more ‘personal time’ with students in smaller groups. Ashraf also makes his schedule available online so students can easily set up meeting times. Hmm….
