Friday’s Featured Friend: Decisiveness

A trait that I constantly look for in people I work with is decisiveness, or the ability to make decisions. This is one of the most important life skills a young person can develop; learn to make a decision and be confident in it. More often than not, it seems that peoples’ waffling over ‘what to do’ gets them in more trouble than making the wrong decision and sticking by it take John Kerry’s Presidential run as an example“ he was a waffler and it cost him the presidency.

Admittedly, I am one of those people who occasionally struggle with decision making. To counteract this, I have found a great little expression that I have begun using: ‘make it happen.’

I just love the expression because of its finality: no more excuses; no ‘if’s, and’s or buts,’ now is now, just get it done. It is a great way to end a conversation. It can be a great way to put the ball in the other person’s court. It can be a great self-motivational term.

Recently we were working with a firm who was waffling on getting us a proposal. I simply asked myself, ‘Are these guys going to make this happen for us’? The answer was no. I moved on.
